Tap Water – In a nutshell don’t drink it. There are currently four sources of tap water in the Alona area; Government water, a private company, trucked in water and private wells. The Government water supply contains saltwater and is untreated. The private company installed shallow buried pipes to supply water to some areas of Alona. They use reverse osmosis to purify the water. The integrity of the pipelines is the question? Trucked in water comes from Tagbilaran City. It is Government water and is not treated but is not salty. Private wells are mostly untreated water. Be safe and drink only bottled water.

Motorbike rentals – First let me clearly state this paragraph is in no way a criticism of Filipino drivers but rather my observations/experience of their driving habits. I’m sure similar conditions exist in other countries. Before you jump on that rented motorbike and cruise around Bohol there are some things you should know about driving here (and likely anyplace else in the Philippines).  Make sure the rental has a current license plate and insurance and you have a valid drivers license from your home country preferably with a motorcycle endorsement. The odds of this being checked are slim to none but if you do encounter the rare checkpoint you could have some legal complications in addition to the motorbike possibly being confiscated. Be sure the tires have tread left on them, especially the rear one, or you will be walking that motorbike to the nearest "vulcanizing" facility for flat tire repair.

In a nutshell there are no “rules of the road” and no "right of way". I can best describe driving in the Philippines as "organized chaos".

Some driving examples are; disobeying traffic signs/signals - driving the wrong direction on one way roads - driving on the wrong side of the road - speeding - passing on blind curves and crests of hills - passing then abruptly stopping in front of you to pickup/discharge passengers, unload freight or make a turn - making sudden U turns from the right edge of the road - no working signal and/or brake lights on many vehicles. Add to this; loose dogs, chickens and the occasional un-tethered goat or cow on the road. Night driving is even more challenging as many of the vehicles have some or no working lights.

Pro Safari Dive Center is located in BQ Mall in Tagbilaran City and is the only retail dive shop in the city.
DCS (Decompression Sickness) – There is no hyperbaric chamber in Bohol. The closest chamber is in Cebu. The emergency hotline number for D.A.N. Philippines is (02) 632-1077.
Malaria & Dengue Fever - Malaria is exceedingly rare in Bohol. Dengue Fever is present in Bohol and can be a problem especially after rainy times near urban areas. Dengue is transmitted to humans by the Aedes aegypti or more rarely the Aedes albopictus mosquito, which feed during the day. Consult your physician for information and advice on Dengue Fever. I am not a physician nor is this information intended to give medical advice.
The closest hospital(s) are in Tagbilaran City. There is a Government Clinic in Poblacion Town but is not setup to handle serious emergencies. I advise against going there. It is open during daytime hours only and closed on weekends and holidays.

Scuba regulator repairs can be very difficult to accomplish in Bohol. The nearest authorized Scubapro dealer/repair is on the neighbor island of Cebu. Should you need an emergency repair to your first or second stage (depending on the brand) call or text Divemaster “Belyong” in Alona Beach at cell 09092651068. He has been trained in repairing several regulator brands and may be able to save your dive vacation.

TIP - Next time you have your regulator serviced keep the old parts and take them with you when traveling. They may come in handy.
